The Progressive Era to the New Era, 1900-1929 » The New Deal Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s protean presidency from 1933 to 1945 (the longest term of leadership in this nation’s history) has provoked many debates about the man and his policies. The effects of the Gilded Age led many Americans to seek reform in order to improve society and limit the power of big business. Their efforts were interrupted by World War I which lasted from 1914-1917 (America entered the war in 1917). Following World War I, the United States entered a boom period quickly followed by the Great Depression.
